Burning questions

Burning and extinguishing

Wanderlight candles have been developed according to a special (and authentic) recipe. They are only suitable for this specific wick, and the candle’s diameters were taken into account. Ensuring that they burn beautifully and safely.

Almost the complete candle burns up, to create as little waste as possible. For the remaining candle wax, we recommend to cut it away all around until just above the flame. You can save the remaining pieces and add to the candle wax ‘container’ in the meantime. Your candle will burn best if the flame gets enough oxygen!

A Wanderlight medium burns for approximately 210 hours and a large for approximately 320 hours. Suppose the candle burns for an average of 2 hours every day, the medium version will last about 4 months and the large version will last almost 6 months.

Yes, Wanderlights are just as safe as any other candle. They are all (handmade with a composition of the right ingredients, so we can be sure that Wanderlights burn safely.

Please note! Just like any other candle, you must handle it with care. It is and remains a natural product in combination with fire. Therefore, install your Wanderlights in a quiet corner, out of drafts. Also, ensure a safe height (for kids and pets) and check occasionally whether your Wanderlight is still functioning properly. It’s like a plant: it needs attention.

Wanderlights candles are intended as an interior accessory. Weather elements can damage the candle outside, discolor it, and it may not burn properly.

There are a few factors that may have an influence:

  • Temperature changes in the room can affect the faster or slower melting of the candle wax and the size of the flame (summer/winter);
  • Drafts can cause a candle to flicker, smoke, and leak. Do not hang Wanderlights in a place with a lot of drafts or passers-by, and make sure the room is well-ventilated.
  • Soot can ‘throw a spanner in the works’ like any candle. A lot of soot on the Wanderlight wick can create a thick flame that makes the candle more likely to overflow. This can simply be prevented by regularly removing soot with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner. If the flame is small, there is probably too much soot residue in the candle wax, try to cut it away as best as possible.
  • It could be that candle wax gets stuck in the wick above the candle, for example, because you have moved the candles up or down the wick. This means that the flame can burn equally ‘big’ a bit further up, or even produce two flames. No problem! This disappears after a few seconds.
  • Cutting oil is used in the production of the wick. The wick is cleaned as best as possible, but there may still be some left behind. Sometimes the burning candle can therefore produce an oily odor, which disappears automatically when burned

The flame may become smaller or even go out if a lot of soot has entered the candle. Or if the flame does not get enough oxygen because it has sunk deep into the candle.

If there is too much soot: extinguish the flame. After it has solidified for a while, first clean the soot on the wick with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner. Moisten the supplied cloth and use it to clean the wick even more. Remove as much soot as possible from the candle wax with a knife. Then slide your complete Wanderlight slightly up or down on the wick and light it again. You will see: that a new, bigger flame is created.

With a deeply sunken flame: cut away the candle wax edge all around until just above the flame. You can save the remaining pieces and add them back to the candle wax ‘container’ in the meantime. Your candle will burn better if the flame gets enough oxygen!

Extinguishing Wanderlights is just like with any other candle. Always blow out the flame slowly to avoid splashes. Also, make sure that you always turn off your Wanderlight before you leave the house.

Wick

The wick creates a flame, so your Wanderlight comes to life. In addition, this special metal wick does not burn out, even with prolonged and continuous burning. This ensures that the wick keeps the candle hanging!! In combination with the 2-meter black cable, you can attach the candle to the wall or ceiling.

The unique thing about Wanderlight candles is that the metal wick continues above the flame. Soot adheres to this, which has the advantage that it does not pollute the air of the room. Nothing to worry about. This is a sign that all is well with your Wanderlight.

When burning frequently, the soot on the wick can sometimes be more and sometimes be less. Would you like to remove it? Suck away the soot with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner when the candle is ‘cold’.

Ceramic disk

The function of the disk is to catch overflowing candle wax. To prevent this, it is advisable to regularly remove excess soot from the wick. Check regularly if the disk is full: after solidification, you can easily remove the candle wax using a  knife.

When the candle on top of the disk has almost burned out, it is time to add new candles. Follow steps 1-6 under the heading REFILL to do this.

Wanderlights are designed with love and care. With a refined color scheme, design, and composition. But the nice thing about this design is that we leave it up to you to change the composition with your creativity and wishes. This way you are free to place the disk at a different height!

How to install

Wanderlights work best in a corner, without drafts.

Please note! Is your Wanderlight hanging from the ceiling? Then make sure that the distance to the wall or other objects is at least 20 cm.

Tip! Use another candle to check if the spot is suitable. For example, light a tealight and see if the flame is not flickering or unstable. Does the flame continue to burn quietly? Then you know that your Wanderlight will enjoy this place.

With the included tools, you can hang Wanderlights in 2 ways:

  • On the ceiling on an easy-to-mount tool, with which you can also adjust the height
  • On the wall with the supplied wall hook

No, the plug that is included is only intended for a solid (stone/concrete) wall or ceiling.

Wanderlights medium weighs approximately 800 grams and large approximately 1050 grams

Refill

Wanderlights are designed specially to keep adding new candles. The further your Wanderlight burns, the less weight it has. This can cause it to hang slightly off balance. This is the sign: time to refill! How?

  1. When the candle is burning and the wax has melted, blow it out carefully;
  2. Wait until the candle wax has solidified, but is still soft, so that the candle can easily be removed from the wick;
  3. First vacuum away all the soot with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner, dampen the cloth provided, and wipe the wick above the candle clean: don’t forget about the connecting piece</span >
  4. Unscrew the wick with candles at the connecting piece and place it on the table. Tip! Place an old newspaper underneath it;
  5. Pull the cable tensioner knob at the bottom of the candle to remove it from the wick;
  6. Thread new candles with the ceramic disk, the steel disc + cable tensioner onto the wick again and tighten the wick securely to the connecting piece

The steel disc at the bottom of the wick serves as a ‘stop’ so that the last candle goes out when the flame reaches here. In addition, it ensures that the candle hangs straight. The purpose of the tensioner at the bottom of the disc is to support the candle and to loosen it to exchange parts.

Yes you can! This is how: extinguish the flame, and after it has solidified for a while, first suck the soot off the wick with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner. If the candle wax is still soft, you can easily remove all parts from the wick: clean the wick and the bowl in hot soapy water with a soft sponge.

The function of the skewer is to re-pierce clogged holes in candles. If you are going to refill your Wanderlight, holes can become clogged: heat the skewer thoroughly (fire or in a glass of boiling water) to make it easier to pierce candles before stringing them back onto the wick.

The wick sucks up melted candle wax: upwards and sometimes downwards. To ensure that the tensioner clamps properly again, remove all parts of the wick and burn it ‘clean’ from bottom to top with a lighter. You can place the spanner in boiling water for a while to clean it.
