Burning questions

Do you have a burning question about Wanderlights? Find the answers to the most frequently asked questions here.

Burning and extinguishing

Wanderlight candles have been developed according to a special (and authentic) recipe. They are only suitable for this specific wick, and the candle’s diameters were taken into account. Ensuring that they burn beautifully and safely.

Almost the complete candle burns up, to create as little waste as possible. For the remaining candle wax, we recommend to cut it away all around until just above the flame. You can save the remaining pieces and add to the candle wax ‘container’ in the meantime. Your candle will burn best if the flame gets enough oxygen!

A complete Wanderlight burns for approximately 280 hours. If the candle burns for 2 hours every day, it will last about 5 months.

Yes, Wanderlights are just as safe as any other candle. They are all (handmade with a composition of the right ingredients, so we can be sure that Wanderlights burn safely.

Please note! Just like any other candle, you must handle it with care. It is and remains a natural product in combination with fire. Therefore, install your Wanderlights in a quiet corner, out of drafts. Also, ensure a safe height (for kids and pets) and check occasionally whether your Wanderlight is still functioning properly. It’s like a plant: it needs attention.

Of course. You will find the Wanderlights mounting set at Collection in the webshop. Tip: hang this under a canopy or balcony so that rain has no influence. Disconnect the wick indoors with your Wanderlight to hang it outside in no time for special mood lighting in your garden.

In principle, Wanderlights are not the most difficult. However, there are a few factors that may have an influence, namely:

  • Temperature changes in the room can affect the faster or slower melting of the candle wax and the size of the flame (summer/winter);
  • Soot can literally ‘throw a spanner in the works’ like any candle. This can simply be remedied by regularly removing soot with the supplied cleaning cloth. If the flame is small, there is probably too much soot residue in the candle wax, try to cut it away as best as possible.
  • When you blow out the candle, the candle wax solidifies, also in the wick above the candle. This means that when you light the candle again, the flame can burn the same ‘big’ way up or even produce two flames. No problem! This disappears after a few seconds.
  • Cutting oil is used in the production of the wick. We have cleaned these as best as possible, but there may still be some left behind. Sometimes the burning candle can therefore give off an oily odor, which disappears automatically when burned

The flame may become smaller or even go out if a lot of soot has gotten into the candle. Or if the flame does not get enough oxygen because it has sunk deep into the candle. If there is too much soot: extinguish the flame and after a short period of solidification, place the candle with the glass cylinder, preferably on a cloth on the table. Remove the glass cylinder, slightly dampen the supplied cleaning cloth and wipe the wick clean. Remove as much soot as possible from the candle wax with a knife. You can also remove everything and clean the cylinder and wick in hot, soapy water.

In the case of a deeply sunken flame: cut away the edge of the candle wax all around until just above the flame. You can save the remaining pieces and add them back to the candle wax ‘container’ in the meantime. Your candle will burn better if the flame gets enough oxygen!

Wick

The wick creates a flame, so your Wanderlight comes to life. In addition, this special metal wick does not burn out, even with prolonged and continuous burning. This ensures that the wick keeps the candle hanging!! In combination with the 2-meter black cable, you can attach the candle to the wall or ceiling.

The unique thing about Wanderlight candles is that the metal wick continues above the flame. Soot adheres to this, which has the advantage that it does not pollute the air of the room. Nothing to worry about. This is a sign that all is well with your Wanderlight.

When burning frequently, the soot on the wick can sometimes be more and sometimes be less. Would you like to remove it? Suck away the soot with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner when the candle is ‘cold’.

No, the fuse has been carefully cut to length and sealed at the bottom so that stringing is problem-free. Also keep in mind that there is always approximately 15 cm free above the candle to the connecting piece so that the connecting piece and the hanging cable above it do not become too hot.

The wick sucks up melted candle wax: upwards and sometimes downwards. To ensure that the tensioner clamps properly again, remove all parts of the fuse and burn it ‘clean’ from bottom to top with a lighter. You can place the spanner in boiling water for a while so that it also becomes clean.

Glass cylinder

The glass cylinder is made of approximately 3 mm thick heat-resistant laboratory glass and has the function of allowing the candle to burn beautifully and safely in any desired location.

If the candle in the cylinder is almost empty, it can cause soot to form on the glass. You can simply remove this by cleaning it in warm soapy water.

Ceramic disk

The function of the bowl is to catch overflowing candle wax and to support the glass cylinder.

When the candle on top of the disk has almost burned out, it is time to add new candles. Follow steps 1-6 under the heading REFILL to do this.

To hang the candle with the glass cylinder straight, a counterweight is always needed under the bowl. We leave it to your creativity and wishes to change the composition, but always make sure that there is enough weight under the bowl.

How to install

With the included tools, you can hang Wanderlights in 2 ways:

  • On the ceiling on an easy-to-mount tool, with which you can also adjust the height
  • On the wall with the supplied wall hook

No, the plug that is included is only intended for a solid (stone/concrete) wall or ceiling.

A Wanderlight weighs approximately 1050 grams.

Certainly, if your Wanderlight is hanging at the right height, you can possibly shorten the part that hangs out of the adjustment bush with pliers.

Extinguish

Extinguishing Wanderlights is just like with any other candle. Always blow out the flame slowly to avoid splashes. Also make sure that you always turn off your Wanderlight before you leave the house.

Refill

Wanderlights are designed in a special way so that you can keep replenishing them. The further your Wanderlight burns, the less weight it has. This can cause him to hang slightly off balance. This is the sign: time to replenish! How?

  1. When the candle is burning and the wax has melted, blow it out slowly;
  2. Wait until the candle wax has solidified, but is still soft, so that the candle can easily be removed from the wick;
  3. Unscrew the fuse at the connecting piece and place your Wanderlight on the table. Tip! Preferably place a soft cloth underneath;
  4. Pull the knob of the cable tensioner at the bottom of the candle to remove it from the wick;
  5. Thread new candles with the bowl, the steel disc + cable tensioner onto the wick again. Finally, place the glass cylinder back on the dish and firmly tighten the wick to the connecting piece

The steel disc at the bottom of the wick serves as a ‘stop’ so that the last candle goes out when the flame reaches here. In addition, it ensures that the candle hangs straight. The purpose of the tensioner at the bottom of the disc is to support the candle and to loosen it to exchange parts.

Yes you can! This is how: extinguish the flame, and after it has solidified for a while, first suck the soot off the wick with a (handheld) vacuum cleaner. If the candle wax is still soft, you can easily remove all parts from the wick: clean the wick and the bowl in hot soapy water with a soft sponge.

The function of the skewer is to re-pierce clogged holes in candles. If you are going to refill your Wanderlight, holes can become clogged: heat the skewer thoroughly (fire or in a glass of boiling water) to make it easier to pierce candles before stringing them back onto the wick.
